Most of us don’t spend a lot of time inspecting our feet—especially in winter. But ignoring subtle changes in your toenails can lead to a condition called Onychomycosis (Fungal Nail Infection).
What starts as a minor cosmetic issue can quickly escalate into a painful medical condition that spreads to other toes or even to family members.
Are you unsure if that spot on your toe is serious? Here are the 5 most common warning signs that fungus has moved in.
1. Discoloration (The White or Yellow Spot)
This is usually the very first sign. You might notice a small white, yellow, or even brown spot appear on the tip of your toenail.
- The Myth: “It’s just a stain from nail polish.”
- The Reality: As the fungus grows deeper, this discoloration will spread, turning the entire nail a murky yellow or dark brown.
2. Thickening of the Nail
Have your toenails become surprisingly hard to trim?
- The Myth: “My nails are just getting old.”
- The Reality: Fungal infections cause the nail plate to hyper-keratinize (thicken). This not only makes them difficult to cut but can also cause pain when wearing closed-toe shoes because the thickened nail presses against the top of the toe box.
3. Brittle or Crumbling Edges
Healthy nails are smooth and solid. Infected nails become brittle.
- The Sign: If the edges of your nail are ragged, crumbling, or breaking away easily, the fungus is likely breaking down the keratin structure of the nail. You might find bits of nail debris in your socks.
4. Distorted Shape
As the infection takes hold, the nail may begin to grow strangely. It may curl down at the sides (which can cause ingrown toenails) or lift up. This distortion can alter the biomechanics of your shoe fit, leading to secondary pain or blisters.
5. Foul Odor
This is the sign nobody likes to talk about.
- The Cause: The “cheese-like” debris that builds up under an infected nail is actually a mix of fungal byproducts and skin protein. If your feet have a distinct odor even after washing, the source might be under the nail, not on the skin.
Why You Shouldn’t Wait
Fungal infections are contagious. If left untreated, the fungus can:
- Spread to your other toes.
- Spread to the skin (causing Athlete’s Foot).
- Infect family members who share your shower or bath mat.
